Suppressors · SBRs · Other NFA items

The NFA process.
Made understandable.

Buying an NFA item involves more paperwork than a standard firearm purchase, but it does not need to be confusing. TommyGuns Transfers guides you through the Form 4 process from purchase to approval.

Start an NFA transfer

Step by step

What to expect

01

Choose your NFA item

Select a suppressor or other NFA-regulated firearm through TommyGuns Transfers, or arrange to have an item transferred to us from another dealer.

02

Choose individual or gun trust

You may register the item as an individual or through a valid gun trust. Trust filings require the trust documents and information for each responsible person.

03

Complete the eForm 4

TommyGuns Transfers starts the electronic Form 4. You review your information and certify the application using your own ATF eForms account and PIN.

04

Submit photo and fingerprints

ATF requires a current photograph and fingerprints. For a trust, each responsible person must submit the required responsible-person information, photograph, and fingerprints.

05

Confirm the applicable tax

The federal transfer tax is $0 for suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and other non-machine-gun, non-destructive-device NFA firearms. Machine guns and destructive devices remain subject to a $200 transfer tax.

06

Wait for approval and pick up

The NFA item remains with TommyGuns Transfers while ATF reviews the application. After approval, we contact you to complete the required pickup paperwork and take possession.

Before filing

Individual or gun trust?

Either method can work. The right choice depends on who may need lawful access to the item and how you want it managed over time.

Individual

Registered directly to you

A simpler filing structure when the NFA item will be registered only to the individual applicant.

Gun trust

Registered to a legal trust

A trust can provide a structure for responsible persons and future management of NFA property. Every responsible person must satisfy ATF submission requirements.
